Understanding Loading in Health Insurance
Loading in health insurance refers to an additional fee added to the annual premium. Health insurance providers calculate premiums considering a person's age and under the assumption that there are no existing health issues. If the insured individual is prone to certain risks, such as an unhealthy lifestyle or chronic pre-existing conditions, then loading is added to cover the potential losses and risks. Types of Loading in Health Insurance

Initially, when a policyholder filed a claim, the insurer would automatically categorise that individual as a high-risk client and impose loading charges on their health insurance during renewal. This was mostly seen in case of serious conditions like cancer, which carry a high possibility of recurrence.
Understanding the distress of policyholders, the Government passed the Hospital Insurance Regulations, 2013. As per the regulation, an insurance provider cannot imply loading charges at the time of claim processing for the first 3 years. Post that, the insurer will have the discretion of pressing loading charges.
Factors that Influence Loading

- Age: Ageing increases the possibility of hospitalisation or illness. Keeping this in mind, your insurance company can apply a loading to your base premium.
- Medical State: The individual's health condition is also a crucial factor. Individuals with diabetes, high blood pressure or hypertension are likely to encounter higher premium rates than others.
- Pre-existing Condition: Applicants with existing health conditions usually submit more claims for hospital expenses. Due to their high-risk profile, insurance companies add loading to their health insurance premium.
- Smoking: Tobacco or nicotine consumption can cause severe damage to your health. Thus, the health insurance premium of a smoker is higher than that of a non-smoker.
- Obesity: Insurance companies perceive overweight individuals as more prone to medical conditions, which could lead to increased claims. This allows them to consider adding loading to their premium rate.
- Occupation: People with hazardous jobs are subjected to loading charges.
- Location: Individuals who belong to certain problematic regions have higher premiums due to environmental aspects, specific health challenges, and limited access to nutritious food.
