Eyes are the windows to the soul is a well known saying that most of us have heard. Eyecare at home should always be followed only under a doctor’s supervision.

The tiredness of the eyes and watering occurs due to increased screen time which causes strain to the eyes. This can be reduced by taking a frequent break of 20 seconds for every 20 minutes.

Reducing the brightness of the screen and frequent blinking of eyes helps in the even distribution of tear film over the ocular surface. Lubricating eye drops containing carboxymethylcellulose help in preventing dryness of the eyes.

Exposure to ocular foreign bodies, such as dust particles and metallic particles, can result in severe irritation of the eyes and redness. The patient should wash their eyes with clean water in such an event and seek medical help as soon as possible.

Applying self medications such as over-the-counter steroid drops and removal of the foreign body using safety pins can result in infection of the eyes and other serious complications.

Chemical injury to the eye can result in vision loss due to decompensation of the cornea. Medical help should be immediately sought after washing the eyes with clean water.

Dark circles around the eyes mainly occur due to lesser hours of sleep, poor diet habits, smoking and dehydration. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and an adequate amount of sleep can help in reducing dark circles.

Straining of eyes caused due to convergence insufficiency seen in younger individuals can be reduced by orthoptic exercises, which are taught by ophthalmic technicians.

Consumption of Vitamin A-rich foods such as carrots, leafy greens, fish and eggs are good for improving the eyesight in children.
